The Health Evolution Collective Podcast

Mar 12, 2019

The information Jessica shares with us in this two part podcast is very close to my heart. She openly shares her story with disordered eating, both near anorexia and binge eating - which began when she was 14 years old.

Jessica is an Accredited Practising Dietitian and PhD Candidate. Her research doctorate is a formal investigation into the use of low carb diets in type 1 diabetes management.

Her PhD into Type 1 diabetes was not where she thought she would head. While she was at Uni, her father suffered a heart attack, and was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Because of this, thought she would undertake a systematic review on type 2 diabetes management.

But she found all of this had already been done.

"If you look at the research, there is so much evidence investigating low carb diets for type 2 - an overwhelming amount to be honest, and it's really strong. It's hard to fault low carb diets as being the most effective intervention for type 2 diabetes."

So where are we going wrong with that? Why is there is such a disconnect between the research and practice?

1. Who are you and what do you do?

2. Where is the disconnect between the research and practice for type 2 diabetes management?

"My dad was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes - but it's not that he was sitting back and eating everything and not trying at all - he was trying. He was following the conventional advice to cut his fat, eat wholegrains, eat small meals multiple times a day."

3. What is your personal story of what led you in to dietetics?

4. What do you think were the triggers for you to head down this path of disordered eating?

"When I say my family and I were healthy, our perception of health isn't what it is now. What we called healthy back then, I wouldn't necessarily consider to be healthy now."

5. How did you get out of the toxic dieting cycle?

"I was going in to Uni to be a dietitian, and I was overweight and struggling with a binge eating disorder."

6. Did university give you the answers you needed to get help?

"The fundamentals of science alone gave me the answers."

"It allowed me to find my healthy weight which I never thought was going to happen again."
