Jessica is an Accredited Practicing Dietitian, Nutritionist and a PhD Candidate. We first spoke to Jess in Episodes 12 & 13, where she openly shared her story with disordered eating.
Today we talked about the calories in calories out myth (or the eat less move more mantra) - and why it's time to put this to bed.
"There is a world beyond calories!"
We talk about some client scenarios we've both experienced that really show why there is so much more to the story.
The scenario of a 40 something female, overweight, no energy, feeling crap... yet doesn't eat very many calories.
Both Jess and I have seen this scenario a number of times, and we share how this is very real and possible, especially when calories have been reduced for so long, and the bodies subsequent survival responses.
Another big part of our chat today focused around stress... what it comes from, how it changes your body, what the symptoms are of excess stress within the body.
This constant level of anxiety that many of us live with is having a very damaging impact on our health.
"Just becomes it's common, doesn't make it normal."
Finally we talk about the hormone Cortisol - it's role, how it works, and the problems that come when it's not working as it should.
