Lily Nichols is a Registered Dietitian/Nutritionist, Certified Diabetes Educator, researcher, author, and an all round inspirational lady.

She is the author of two bestselling books, Real Food for Pregnancy, and Real Food for Gestational Diabetes.

It was an absolute pleasure chatting to Lily. We talked for over an hour, so this podcast is a little longer than my usual ones. But there was nothing I could take out as there is just so much great info in here for anyone thinking of having a baby, pregnant, just had a baby, or just anyone interested in women's health.

We talked about:

  • the disconnect between the science and the recommended dietary guidelines for pregnant women, and those diagnosed with gestational diabetes
  • what actually gestational diabetes is, and the risks to mother and baby
  • how does what Lily recommends differ from the standard advice

 

"If you go very low fat, it's going to be very difficult to obtain a lot of the micro-nutrients needed for baby's brain development."

  • the problems and risks to both mother and baby of a vegetarian and vegan diet

 

"The nutrients that are most likely to be not obtained in sufficient quantities in a form that you can utilise or absorb well, or might be missing from the diet entirely when animal products are missing from the diet are:

  1. B12
  2. Choline
  3. Glycine
  4. Ret A
  5. VitK2
  6. Iron
  7. Zinc"

 

  • the risks of a low calorie, low fat diet with regard to fertility and pregnancy
  • what is hypothalamic amenorrhea (HA) & PCOS and how fertility can be dysregulated by diet
  • chemicals, hormones and endocrine disruptors and toxin exposure, and how this impacts our health and babies development
  • the 4th trimester - after birth maternal health and well-being
  • the loss of the 'village' in western culture, and how its impact on new mums. Lily talks about how other cultures do things very differently, and why
  • Lily turns the mike on me and asks me about how things were for me between babies 1 and babies 5
  • we chat about many things in this very relaxed part of the podcast that all mums will relate too.. breastfeeding, tongue ties, weight loss postpartum...
